Pleco FAQ
Do plecos really eat all my algae? Many do graze on algae, especially smaller species like bristlenose, but no pleco is a complete clean-up crew. They still need a proper diet of sinking algae wafers and vegetables, and they produce a lot of waste, so don’t rely on them as your only solution. Pair them with otocinclus or a snail clean-up crew for better coverage.
How big do plecos get? It depends entirely on the species. A common pleco can exceed 18 inches and needs a very large tank, while a bristlenose stays around 4 to 6 inches. Always check the adult size of the specific pleco before buying.
What do I feed my pleco? Most need a varied diet of sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and (for many species) driftwood to rasp on. Some, like clown and other wood-eating plecos, depend on driftwood in the tank.
Are plecos good tank mates for community fish? Yes, most smaller plecos are peaceful and pair well with tetras, corydoras, and other calm community fish. For more, see our bristlenose vs. common pleco guide.
