Loaches for Sale – Freshwater Bottom Dwellers
Freshwater Loaches for Sale
Most loaches are social and do best in groups. Please check adult size before purchasing, as species like clown loaches and dojo loaches need much larger aquariums than kuhli loaches.
Shop our selection of freshwater loaches, the active, charismatic bottom-dwellers that bring constant movement and personality to a tank. Loaches spend their days rooting through substrate, darting between caves, and exploring driftwood, and many of them develop real character once they settle in. At Tropical Treasures in Cheyenne we hand-select healthy, well-started loaches so you get fish that are eating and active before they ever leave the shop.
Loaches range enormously in size and temperament, so a little planning goes a long way. Some, like kuhli loaches, stay small and peaceful and slot right into a nano community, while others, like clown loaches, grow large and live for decades, so they need bigger tanks and a long-term commitment.
Popular Loach Varieties
You'll often find a rotating mix of species in store. Common favorites include:
- Kuhli loaches — slender, eel-like, peaceful, and perfect for planted nano tanks. (Kuhli loach care guide)
- Clown loaches — bold, colorful, social schoolers that grow large over time. (Clown loach care guide)
- Yoyo, zebra, and dojo loaches — active, hardy species with loads of personality.
- Hillstream loaches — flat, current-loving grazers for cooler, oxygen-rich tanks.
Many loaches overlap in care with our corydoras catfish and other peaceful bottom dwellers.
Loach Care Tips
Most loaches are social and far happier in groups of five or more, where they school, play, and feel secure. Give them a soft sandy substrate or smooth gravel so they can sift without scratching their delicate barbels, and provide plenty of caves, driftwood, and live plants for cover. Always cycle your tank fully before adding loaches, since they're sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes. A varied diet of quality sinking foods, frozen treats, and the occasional blanched vegetable keeps them in top condition.
Best Tank Mates for Loaches
Peaceful loaches do beautifully with tetras, rasboras, guppies, and other calm community fish. Many keepers add them as a natural pest-snail patrol alongside a shrimp or snail clean-up crew, though note that some larger loaches will eat small snails. For a peaceful nano build, our guide to the best schooling fish pairs well with smaller loach species.
FAQ: Freshwater Loaches
How many loaches should I keep together? Most species are social and should be kept in groups of at least five. Lone loaches tend to be shy, stressed, and less active.
Do loaches get big? It depends on the species. Kuhli loaches stay around 3–4 inches, while clown loaches can eventually reach 8–12 inches and need a large tank. Always check the adult size before buying.
Are loaches good for beginners? Smaller, hardy species like kuhli and yoyo loaches are very beginner-friendly once your tank is cycled. Clown loaches are better suited to keepers ready for a long-term, large-tank commitment.
Will loaches eat my snails? Many loaches help control nuisance pest snails, which is great for an algae-prone tank but something to consider if you keep prized ornamental snails.
