🐸 Aquatic Frog

Most Common Type aquatic frog in Aquariums:

  • African Dwarf Frog (Hymenochirus spp.) – fully aquatic, peaceful, and small (1.5–2 inches).

  • ⚠️ Not to be confused with African Clawed Frogs (Xenopus laevis), which grow much larger, can be aggressive, and are often illegal in some states.

🌊 Care & Habitat

  • Tank Size: Minimum 5–10 gallons for a pair.
  • Water Temp: 72–78°F (22–26°C).
  • pH: 6.5–7.8.
  • Setup: Gentle filtration, tight-fitting lid (they can escape), sandy or smooth gravel substrate, live or silk plants, and hiding spots.
  • Behavior: Peaceful, best kept in small groups (2–4). Active swimmers but also spend time resting at the bottom.

🍴 Diet

  • Carnivorous → eat frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, tubifex, and sinking frog pellets.
  • Feed 3–4 times a week. Remove uneaten food to prevent fouling.

🐟 Tankmates

  • Peaceful nano fish (tetras, rasboras, guppies, corydoras).
  • Avoid aggressive or large fish that may nip at them.

✅ Key Notes

  • Must surface to breathe air (have lungs, not gills).
  • Handle as little as possible → delicate skin.
  • Known for “singing”/humming males at night.
  • Lifespan: 5 years average, sometimes up to 10 with good care.
