Mystery Snail Colors: Magenta, Gold, Blue, Ivory and Jade

Our freshwater snail listings include several mystery snail color varieties. A magenta mystery snail has distinctive pink-to-purple shell tones; a gold mystery snail brings a warm yellow-gold appearance. You can also browse the pale shell of an ivory mystery snail, a darker blue mystery snail, and the greenish shell tones often associated with a jade mystery snail. Shopify product listings may remain active even when an individual color is temporarily out of stock, so check current availability before visiting.

Most of these color forms are sold as Pomacea diffusa. Give mystery snails a cycled aquarium, a secure lid with suitable space above the waterline, calcium and mineral support appropriate to your water chemistry, and supplemental food. These snails add to the aquarium's bioload and still need routine water changes.

Zebra, Tiger and Other Nerite Snails

Zebra nerite snails and tiger nerite snails are popular for grazing on algae and biofilm on aquarium glass, rocks, and hardscape. Our catalog also features other nerite shell patterns, including horned and red racer varieties. Nerites can deposit hard white eggs in freshwater, but the eggs generally do not develop into young snails in ordinary freshwater aquariums.

Nerite snails should be added to a mature tank with suitable grazing surfaces, and their diets may need supplementation if natural algae and biofilm are scarce. They cannot solve every type of algae problem, and no snail replaces proper filtration or aquarium maintenance.

Assassin Snails and Other Freshwater Snails

Assassin snails are different from algae-grazing cleanup snails: they are predatory and may consume other snails, including desirable varieties. Choose them only when that behavior fits your aquarium plan. We also list rabbit snails, trapdoor snails, and other freshwater snails with differing sizes, diets, and water requirements. Ask our team for help matching species to your tank rather than assuming every snail has the same care needs.

Choosing Snails for a Freshwater Aquarium

For a planted freshwater aquarium, consider the snail's adult size, diet, shell-health requirements, compatible fish and shrimp, and whether the aquarium has sufficient natural food. Peaceful mystery and nerite snails may coexist with suitable freshwater shrimp; avoid snail-eating fish and avoid keeping assassin snails with snails you want to protect. Perfect for Planted & Shrimp Tanks

Snails pair beautifully with live aquarium plants, freshwater shrimp, and quiet community fish. Nerites won't touch healthy plants, and Mystery Snails actually help groom plant leaves clean of algae. Pair them with a quality aquarium substrate to give them a soft, mineral-rich environment.

Why Add Snails to Your Aquarium?

  • Natural algae control — reduces glass and decor cleaning
  • Eat uneaten food, biofilm, and decaying plant matter
  • Peaceful with fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates
  • Available in stunning colors and shell patterns
  • Low-maintenance and beginner friendly

Compatibility Notes

Avoid keeping snails with known snail-eaters like loaches, pufferfish, and large cichlids. Assassin snails will eat other snails — keep them in a dedicated pest-control tank. Copper-based medications are toxic to all invertebrates, so always quarantine new fish separately before adding to a snail tank.

Tank Setup Tips

  • Stable water parameters with GH 6-12 for strong shell growth
  • Calcium supplementation (cuttlebone or mineral stones) for shell health
  • Temperature 72-80°F for most tropical species
  • Secure lid — Mystery Snails are escape artists
  • Mature, cycled tank with biofilm and algae for grazing

Recommended Food

  • Algae wafers and sinking veggie pellets
  • Blanched zucchini, spinach, and cucumber
  • Calcium-rich snail foods
  • Browse our aquarium fish food collection for snail-safe options

Freshwater Snail FAQ

Will Nerite Snails breed in my aquarium?
No. Nerite Snails require brackish water to reproduce, so they will not overpopulate a freshwater aquarium.

Do Mystery Snails eat live plants?
Mystery Snails usually leave healthy plants alone and prefer algae, biofilm, leftover food, and decaying plant matter.

How many snails can I add to my tank?
A general starting point is one Mystery Snail or Nerite Snail per 5 gallons. Stocking depends on tank size, food availability, filtration, and overall bioload.

Can snails live with shrimp?
Yes. Most peaceful freshwater snails are excellent tankmates for Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp.

How do I control pest snails?
Avoid overfeeding first. Assassin Snails may help control pest snail populations, but they can also eat other small snails.
