Silver Halfbeak for Sale | Freshwater Surface Fish

Silver Halfbeak for Sale

The Silver Halfbeak, also commonly called the Wrestling Halfbeak, is a unique freshwater livebearer known for its long lower jaw, silver body, and surface-dwelling behavior. These unusual fish spend most of their time near the top of the aquarium, making them a great choice for hobbyists looking to add activity to the upper level of the tank.

Silver Halfbeaks are best for aquarists who can provide stable water conditions, peaceful tank mates, floating plants, and a tightly covered aquarium. They are active, interesting fish, but they can be sensitive to sudden changes and may jump if startled.

Silver Halfbeak Care

  • Scientific Name: Dermogenys pusilla
  • Common Names: Silver Halfbeak, Wrestling Halfbeak, Freshwater Halfbeak
  • Adult Size: Up to about 2.5–3 inches
  • Temperament: Peaceful, but males may spar with each other
  • Care Level: Moderate
  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons long recommended
  • Temperature: 75–82°F
  • pH Range: 6.5–8.0
  • Water Hardness: Moderate to hard water preferred
  • Diet: Floating foods, micro pellets, flakes, frozen foods, brine shrimp, daphnia, and small insects

Best Aquarium Setup for Silver Halfbeaks

Silver Halfbeaks do best in aquariums with plenty of open surface space, calm to moderate flow, and floating plants such as frogbit, water lettuce, or hornwort. Because they live near the surface, a longer aquarium is better than a tall aquarium.

A secure lid is very important. Halfbeaks are known jumpers and may dart quickly when startled. Avoid sudden changes in lighting, water chemistry, or temperature, as they can be sensitive to rapid changes.

Silver Halfbeak Tank Mates

Silver Halfbeaks can do well with peaceful community fish that will not nip fins or compete aggressively at the surface. Good tank mates may include peaceful livebearers, small rainbowfish, peaceful danios, rasboras, corydoras, kuhli loaches, and other calm community fish.

Avoid aggressive fish, fin nippers, large predatory fish, and very tiny tank mates that could be viewed as food. Since Halfbeaks stay near the top, they should not be kept with overly aggressive surface feeders.

Feeding Silver Halfbeaks

Silver Halfbeaks are surface feeders and prefer foods that float or stay near the top of the water. Offer high-quality flakes, floating micro pellets, frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other small meaty foods. Sinking foods are often ignored because these fish rarely feed from the bottom.

Important Care Notes

  • Top-dwelling freshwater livebearer
  • Needs a tight-fitting aquarium lid
  • Best in stable, mature aquariums
  • Prefers floating plants and open surface space
  • Can be sensitive to sudden water parameter changes
  • Males may spar, especially in smaller tanks
