Seachem StressGuard 500 mL – Aquarium Fish Stress & Wound Care

Seachem StressGuard 500 mL is a premium aquarium fish-care product designed to reduce stress during handling, transport, acclimation, tank maintenance, and other stressful situations. It also helps support the healing of wounds, abrasions, and damaged fins in freshwater and marine aquarium fish.

StressGuard contains protein-active colloids that bind to exposed proteins around injured areas. This creates a protective, liquid-bandage-like coating that helps deliver the product’s antiseptic action directly to affected tissue and reduces the likelihood of primary and secondary infections.

How to Use

Use one-half to one capful, or 2.5–5 mL, of Seachem StressGuard for every 10 US gallons of aquarium water. Dose once every 24 hours until signs of stress have passed or healing is complete.

Seachem states that the dosage may be safely doubled when necessary. Always begin with the standard label dosage unless a higher amount is appropriate for the situation.

Calculate dosage using the aquarium’s actual water volume. Substrate, rocks, driftwood, decorations, and equipment may reduce the amount of water inside the aquarium compared with its listed capacity.

Approximate Dosage Guide

  • 5-Gallon Aquarium: Approximately 1.25–2.5 mL daily
  • 10-Gallon Aquarium: 2.5–5 mL daily
  • 20-Gallon Aquarium: 5–10 mL daily
  • 40-Gallon Aquarium: 10–20 mL daily
  • 55-Gallon Aquarium: Approximately 13.75–27.5 mL daily
  • 75-Gallon Aquarium: Approximately 18.75–37.5 mL daily
  • 100-Gallon Aquarium: 25–50 mL daily

These amounts are proportional calculations based on Seachem’s official dosage. Always follow the current instructions printed on the bottle.

How StressGuard Works

StressGuard contains protein-active colloids that seek out exposed proteins around wounds, abrasions, and damaged tissue. The colloids attach to these areas and create a protective coating that acts similarly to a liquid bandage.

This action helps deliver the product’s antiseptic properties directly to injured areas while supporting the fish’s natural healing process. StressGuard does not work by irritating fish or forcing them to produce additional slime.

Using StressGuard with Medications

StressGuard is compatible with most aquarium medications. However, it should not be combined with copper-based treatments, including Seachem Cupramine.

Do not assume every medication combination is appropriate. Read all product labels and confirm compatibility before combining treatments. When uncertain, use a separate hospital aquarium or consult the manufacturer.

Filtration & Equipment

Activated carbon and other chemical filtration media do not have a significant effect on StressGuard, so they generally do not need to be removed during normal use.

StressGuard does not coat filtration resins or clog aquarium filters. It also does not interfere with the regeneration of Seachem Purigen or HyperSorb.

Turn off the protein skimmer when dosing StressGuard in a marine aquarium. Resume skimming according to the manufacturer’s guidance after the product has had time to work.

Fish-Care Tips

  • Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and temperature when fish appear stressed
  • Use proper acclimation procedures when introducing new fish
  • Avoid chasing fish with a net for extended periods
  • Maintain stable temperature and water parameters
  • Provide sufficient aeration during treatment
  • Use a quarantine aquarium for new or injured fish when possible
  • Check for aggression, sharp decorations, or equipment that may cause injuries
  • Continue regular water changes and aquarium maintenance

Important Aquarium Care Note

Fish stress may be caused by shipping, handling, poor water quality, ammonia, nitrite, aggression, disease, injury, inappropriate tankmates, unstable temperature, or sudden environmental changes. StressGuard may support stressed or injured fish, but the underlying cause should still be identified and corrected.

StressGuard is not a replacement for water testing, filtration, proper acclimation, quarantine, water changes, or medication when a diagnosed disease requires treatment.
