The Aquarium Co-Op Large Pre-Filter Sponge covers a compatible filter intake to help catch debris and reduce the risk of small aquarium animals entering the filter. The coarse foam also provides surface area for beneficial bacteria.
Manufacturer Specifications
Size: Large
Intake opening: approximately 1.25 inches (31.8 mm)
Outside diameter: approximately 3.5 inches
Length: approximately 5.5 inches
Foam: approximately 20–25 PPI
Compatibility: Measure the Intake, Not the Tank
Choose the pre-filter sponge by measuring the outside diameter of your filter's intake tube. The Large sponge has a 1.25-inch opening and is not automatically compatible with every filter or every aquarium of a given gallon capacity. Check the manufacturer's fit guide and your filter's intake dimensions before purchase.
Use and Maintenance
Slide the sponge over a compatible intake and check that it is secure without excessively restricting flow. When debris accumulates, remove the sponge carefully and rinse it in removed aquarium water to preserve beneficial bacteria. Even with a pre-filter, very tiny fry, shrimp, or snails can sometimes pass through foam depending on suction and animal size.
