Freshwater Aquarium Shrimp FAQ
Are freshwater shrimp good for beginners?
Yes. Neocaridina shrimp such as Cherry shrimp, Blue Dream shrimp, Sakura shrimp, Snowball shrimp, and Orange shrimp are beginner-friendly when kept in a stable, fully cycled aquarium.
What size tank do shrimp need?
Shrimp can live in aquariums as small as 5 gallons, but 10 gallons or larger is often easier to keep stable, especially for beginners or breeding colonies.
Can shrimp live with fish?
Yes, but only with peaceful, shrimp-safe fish. Baby shrimp may still be eaten by many fish, so live plants, moss, driftwood, and hiding places are important.
Do shrimp clean the aquarium?
Shrimp help graze on biofilm, soft algae, leftover food, and decaying plant matter, but they do not replace regular water changes, filtration, and aquarium maintenance.
Can different shrimp colors live together?
Different Neocaridina color morphs can live together, but they may interbreed and eventually produce wild-type offspring. For stronger color lines, keep each color separate.
Are Caridina shrimp harder than Neocaridina shrimp?
Usually, yes. Many Caridina shrimp need more specific water parameters, softer water, and greater stability, while Neocaridina shrimp are generally more forgiving.
Can freshwater shrimp be shipped?
No. Live shrimp are available for in-store purchase or local pickup only at Tropical Treasures Wyo in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
