Super Red Bristlenose Pleco Care Guide (Ancistrus sp.)
The Super Red Bristlenose Pleco is one of the most popular plecos in the freshwater hobby — a fiery orange-red color morph of the standard Bristlenose, with all the algae-grazing, driftwood-rasping personality of the wild form and none of the size problems of a common pleco. At Tropical Treasures Wyo in Cheyenne, Wyoming, it's our most-requested pleco for community tanks: bright enough to stand out against green plants, hardy enough for a first cichlid setup, and small enough to retire happily in a 29-gallon.
This guide covers everything you need to keep Super Red Bristlenose Plecos thriving long-term — tank setup, diet, tank mates, sexing, and breeding — based on how we actually keep and ship them.

Are Super Red Bristlenose Plecos Hard to Keep?
No — they're one of the easiest plecos in the hobby. Unlike common plecos that hit 18+ inches and outgrow most home tanks, Super Reds top out around 5 inches and stay manageable for life. They tolerate a wide range of water parameters, eat almost anything you offer, and rarely show the disease problems that plague more sensitive species.
The two areas where new keepers go wrong are driftwood (they need it — it's not optional) and diet (they aren't pure algae eaters). Get those two right and the rest is easy.
Tank Size & Setup
Minimum tank size
- Single pleco: 20 gallons
- Pair (M/F): 29–30 gallons with two cave options
- Multiple males: 40+ gallons with line-of-sight breaks — males will spar over caves
A wider footprint matters more than height. Bristlenose spend nearly all their time on the bottom, sides, and driftwood, so floor space is what counts.
Substrate
Use fine sand or smooth fine gravel. Sand is gentler on their belly and barbels and lets uneaten food sit on top where they can find it instead of falling between stones to rot.
Aquascape
- Driftwood is essential. Bristlenose rasp wood and need it for digestion — it's not just decor. Malaysian driftwood, mopani, or spider wood all work. A tank without driftwood is the most common reason Super Reds waste away over months.
- Caves and hiding spots. Provide at least one cave per pleco. Ceramic breeding caves, slate stacks, or short pieces of PVC pipe all work. They'll defend a cave year-round, not just when breeding.
- Live plants. Anubias, Java fern, Amazon swords, and cryptocoryne all work well — the pleco won't eat them. Floating plants help dim lighting, which Super Reds appreciate.
- Smooth rocks for additional grazing surface and biofilm.
Filtration & flow
Bristlenose are messy — they eat a lot and produce a lot of waste. Use a filter rated for at least 1.5× your tank volume and clean it monthly. A Fluval AquaClear HOB or a canister works well. Moderate flow is ideal; they don't need a strong current but appreciate well-oxygenated water. For more help, see our aquarium filtration guide.
Heating
Tropical-range heater (see parameters below). A reliable 50–100 watt heater is plenty for tanks up to 30 gallons.
Water Parameters
| Parameter | Ideal Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 72–82°F (22–28°C) | 76–78°F is the sweet spot |
| pH | 6.5–7.5 | Adapts to most tap water |
| GH | 2–15 dGH | Very flexible |
| KH | 3–10 dKH | Stable carbonate hardness preferred |
| Ammonia | 0 ppm | Non-negotiable |
| Nitrite | 0 ppm | Non-negotiable |
| Nitrate | Under 30 ppm | Bristlenose tolerate higher than rams, but lower is better |
Stability matters more than perfect numbers. A Super Red kept at a steady pH 7.4 will thrive; one bouncing between 6.6 and 7.4 weekly will stress out fast. Use a quality dechlorinator like Seachem Prime on every water change. If you're not sure where your tap water sits, we offer free water testing at our Cheyenne store — bring in a sample.
Diet & Feeding
This is where most keepers make mistakes. Super Red Bristlenose are omnivores, not pure algae eaters. They will not survive on tank algae alone, even in a heavily lit planted tank.
A balanced diet:
- Staple: high-quality sinking algae wafers and sinking pellets (Hikari Algae Wafers, Bug Bites Algae Crisps, Repashy Morning Wood)
- Vegetables 2–3× per week: blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, or green beans, weighed down with a veggie clip
- Occasional protein: sinking shrimp pellets or a few frozen bloodworms once a week
- Driftwood, always — they rasp it constantly and it aids digestion
Feed at lights-out. Bristlenose are most active in dim light and will out-compete shyer fish for food after dark. A "thin pleco" hidden in a cave is almost always under-fed, not sick. For more, see our Best Food for Plecos & Bottom Feeders.
Tank Mates
Super Reds are about as peaceful as cichlid-relatives get. They mind their own business and ignore mid- and top-water fish entirely. Their small adult size and gentle nature also make them a tidy cleanup option for a discus tank — see our guide to the best tank mates for discus.
Great tank mates
- Tetras — neon, cardinal, ember, rummy-nose, black skirt
- Rasboras — harlequin, chili, lambchop
- Guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails
- Corydoras catfish
- Peaceful gouramis (honey, pearl, sparkling)
- Apistogramma, German Blue Rams (in warmer setups)
- Dwarf cichlids in 29+ gallons
- Most freshwater shrimp once the pleco is well-fed (see below)
Avoid
- Other male Bristlenose in tanks under 40 gallons — they'll fight over caves
- Large or aggressive cichlids (Oscars, Jaguars, Convicts) that will harass them off food
- Common plecos and other large plecos — direct competition for territory
- Goldfish — wrong temperature and water needs
Risky but possible
Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp. Adult Super Reds usually ignore them, but a hungry pleco may snack on shrimplets. Keep the pleco well-fed and provide dense plant cover. See our Neocaridina shrimp care guide.
Male vs. Female: How to Sex a Super Red Bristlenose
Sexing is one of the easiest in the hobby once they hit 3+ inches:
- Males develop branching "bristles" (tentacles) across the snout and forehead — long, prominent, and unmistakable.
- Females have a much shorter row of small bristles only along the very edge of the snout, never on the forehead.
If you buy a "pair" from us at Tropical Treasures Wyo, we hand-select based on these traits in-store.
Breeding Super Red Bristlenose Plecos
Super Reds are one of the easiest plecos to spawn — most pairs will start breeding on their own once the tank has stabilized.
- Setup: A pair in a 29+ gallon with multiple caves. The male picks a cave and defends it.
- Trigger: A larger-than-usual cool water change (2–3°F drop) often kicks things off, mimicking the rainy season.
- Spawning: The female lays a cluster of bright orange eggs inside the male's cave. He fertilizes them and takes over from there.
- Egg care: The male alone guards and fans the eggs. Do not move him. Eggs hatch in 4–10 days depending on temperature.
- Fry care: Fry stay in the cave attached to their yolk sacs for several more days, then emerge and start grazing on biofilm and crushed algae wafers. Powdered fry food, blanched veggies, and Repashy work well.
A healthy pair can spawn every 4–6 weeks. They sell quickly to local fishkeepers, so plan ahead.
Common Problems & Diseases
- Sunken belly / thin appearance: almost always under-feeding or competition. Feed sinking food at lights-out.
- Loss of color: stressed fish wash out. Check water parameters, dim lighting, and confirm driftwood is present.
- Ich (white spot): uncommon but possible after shipping. Treat with a half-dose ich medication safe for scaleless fish (Hikari Ich-X is our top pick at half dose). See our Common Fish Diseases guide.
- Fungus on eggs: if the male leaves the cave, eggs will fungus quickly. Some methylene blue in a hatching tub can save the brood.
- Ammonia burn / red gills: check your cycle. New tanks crash bristlenose fast because they're high-bioload fish.
Tips for Long-Term Success
- Always provide driftwood. It's not optional.
- Feed sinking food after lights-out. This is the single biggest fix for "thin pleco" problems.
- Do 25–30% water changes weekly. Bristlenose are messy.
- Keep only one male per cave-cluster unless you have a 40+ gallon with sightline breaks.
- Buy from a quarantining source. Every pleco we sell at Tropical Treasures Wyo is quarantined in-house before going home with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big do Super Red Bristlenose Plecos get?
About 4–5 inches as adults — much smaller than a common pleco, which can hit 18 inches.
What size tank do I need for a Super Red Bristlenose?
A minimum 20 gallons for a single pleco, or 29–30 gallons for a male/female pair.
Will a Super Red Bristlenose clean my tank?
They eat algae, but they're not a substitute for water changes or a cleanup crew. Treat them as a beautiful, peaceful community fish that happens to graze, not as a maintenance tool.
Do Super Red Bristlenose really need driftwood?
Yes. They rasp wood as part of digestion and will slowly waste away without it, even with plenty of algae and prepared food.
Can I keep two Super Red Bristlenose together?
A male and female pair is fine in 29+ gallons. Two males will fight over caves unless you have 40+ gallons and multiple cave clusters with broken sightlines.
Are Super Red Bristlenose good for beginners?
Yes — they're one of the most beginner-friendly plecos available, provided you give them driftwood, sinking food, and a cycled tank.
What's the difference between a Super Red Bristlenose and a Super Red Longfin?
Same fish, different fin trait. The Longfin has elongated dorsal, pectoral, and tail fins from a selectively bred line. Care is identical.
Will my Super Red Bristlenose eat my plants?
Almost never. They graze biofilm and algae off plant leaves but don't damage healthy plants.
