How to Use a Refractometer: Measuring Salinity in Your Saltwater Tank

Why salinity matters ๐ŸŒŠ

Fish, corals, and inverts are adapted to a specific salt concentration. Swings in salinity stress them, and big swings can be deadly. Most reef tanks run at a specific gravity around 1.025, or about 35 parts per thousand. The exact number matters less than keeping it stable, which is why a reliable measuring tool is essential.

The plastic swing-arm hydrometers are cheap, but they're notoriously inaccurate, especially as they age or trap bubbles. A refractometer measures how light bends through a drop of water and gives a far more reliable reading. For a tank full of living animals, the small extra cost is well worth it. How to calibrate it ๐Ÿ”ง

Calibration is the step people skip, and it's the most important one. Use RO/DI water (or proper calibration fluid) at room temperature. Place a few drops on the glass, close the plate, look through the eyepiece, and turn the calibration screw until the line sits at 1.000 for fresh water (or the fluid's stated value). Do this regularly, temperature swings can throw it off.

Once calibrated, wipe the glass dry, then add a few drops of tank water. Close the plate, hold it up to a light source, and read where the blue/white boundary crosses the scale. Most refractometers show both specific gravity and parts per thousand. Read at room temperature for consistency, and rinse and dry the unit after each use so salt creep doesn't build up.

Keeping salinity stable โš–๏ธ

The biggest salinity swings come from evaporation. As water evaporates, salt stays behind and salinity rises, so you top off with fresh RO/DI water, never saltwater, to bring the level back.
