Electric Blue Hap Care Guide: Keeping the Bluest Malawi Cichlid

The Electric Blue Hap — also widely sold as the Electric Blue Ahli (Sciaenochromis fryeri, historically labeled S. ahli) — is one of the most iconic Lake Malawi cichlids in the hobby. Whether your shop calls it the Ahli or the Hap, it’s the same dazzling blue fish. A dominant male is a solid, glowing electric-blue from nose to tail — arguably the bluest freshwater fish you can keep. Bold, active, and hardy, it’s a classic showpiece for a Malawi hap-and-peacock community. Here at Tropical Treasures in Cheyenne, blue Malawi cichlids are some of our most-requested African fish. 🐟

A quick heads-up: we don’t currently stock the Electric Blue Hap itself, but we carry several stunning blue Malawi relatives — ask us and we’re happy to point you to a comparable fish or special-order. Here’s everything you need to know to keep one thriving.

⚡ Electric Blue Hap at a glance

The Electric Blue Hap is a Lake Malawi hap reaching about 6–7 inches. Males develop their famous all-over electric-blue color as they mature, while females and juveniles are a silvery gray with faint bars. They’re open-water predators that hunt smaller fish in the wild, so they’re semi-aggressive but manageable in the right community. 📏 Tank size & setup

Because they’re active predators that reach a good size, Electric Blue Haps need at least a 75-gallon tank, with larger preferred for a group or mixed Malawi community. Use a sandy substrate with rockwork to create territories and open swimming lanes. Strong, reliable filtration is essential for these messy eaters. Planning a big display? Our 240-gallon stocking guide has plenty of ideas.

💧 Water parameters

Electric Blue Haps come from the hard, alkaline waters of Lake Malawi and thrive in temperatures of 76–82°F, pH 7.6–8.6, and moderately hard to hard water. Stable, mineral-rich water keeps their blue color vivid, so always dechlorinate fresh water with a quality water conditioner before water changes.

🍽️ Diet & feeding

As natural predators, Electric Blue Haps do best on a high-quality, protein-forward cichlid diet. A staple of quality cichlid pellets works well, supplemented with the occasional frozen meaty treat. Avoid overfeeding mammalian protein — like many Malawi cichlids they’re prone to bloat — and feed smaller portions a couple of times a day rather than one large meal.

🐟 Temperament & tankmates

Electric Blue Haps are semi-aggressive and predatory, so skip anything small enough to be eaten. Pair them with other robust Malawi haps and peacocks of similar size and temperament. Good companions include the Deep Water Hap, the Neon Blue Peacock, the Blue Peacock, and the hardy Electric Yellow Lab for contrast. Keep one male per look-alike species to reduce competition. For a bolder predatory hap, see our Venustus care guide. For another brilliantly colored Malawi hap that mixes well in the same community, read our Red Empress care guide.

🐣 Breeding

Electric Blue Haps are maternal mouthbrooders. A colored-up male will display and dig a spawning site; after spawning, the female holds the eggs and fry in her mouth for around three weeks. To raise the fry, the female can be moved to a separate tank to release and protect them. Well-fed, established groups spawn readily.

Electric Blue Ahli vs. Electric Blue Hap — what’s the difference? None, really. Both names refer to Sciaenochromis fryeri. “Ahli” comes from the old scientific name S. ahli, while “Hap” is short for “haplochromine.” If you’re shopping for an Electric Blue Ahli, you’re looking for exactly the fish described in this guide.

💙 The bottom line

Give an Electric Blue Hap space, hard alkaline water, rocky territory, and appropriately sized Malawi tankmates, and a mature male will reward you with some of the most electric color in the freshwater hobby.
