Reef Tank Water Parameters: A Beginner's Guide to Testing Calcium, Alkalinity & pH

If there's one skill that separates reef keepers whose corals thrive from those who watch them slowly fade, it's testing water and understanding what the numbers mean. A reef tank is a closed slice of ocean, and corals, clams, and invertebrates are far less forgiving of swings than the average freshwater fish. The good news: once you know which parameters matter and how to read them, testing becomes a quick weekly habit rather than a chore.

Why testing matters in a reef tank

Corals build their skeletons out of elements they pull from the water, and as they grow they steadily deplete those elements. Meanwhile, fish waste and feeding push other levels up. Without testing, you're flying blind — you won't catch a calcium crash or an ammonia spike until something is already dying. Stability matters even more than hitting a perfect number: corals adapt to a steady "wrong" value far better than they handle a value that bounces around. Test on a regular schedule, write down your readings, and watch the trends.

Temperature & salinity

Keep your reef between 76–78°F and hold it steady; big daily swings stress corals. Salinity should sit right around 1.025 specific gravity (about 35 ppt). Measure it with a refractometer for accuracy — the cheap swing-arm hydrometers drift over time. Since salt doesn't evaporate but water does, your salinity creeps up as the tank evaporates, which is why daily top-offs with fresh RO/DI water (not saltwater) keep it stable.

The "big three": calcium, alkalinity & magnesium

These three work together to let corals build their calcium-carbonate skeletons, and they're the parameters you'll test most once you keep corals. Calcium should sit around 400–450 ppm. Alkalinity (carbonate hardness) belongs in the 8–12 dKH range and is the single most important value to keep stable, since it swings fastest. Magnesium (around 1250–1350 ppm) is the behind-the-scenes element that keeps calcium and alkalinity in balance — if your calcium and alkalinity won't hold no matter what you dose, low magnesium is usually the culprit. Test calcium and alkalinity weekly, and magnesium every couple of weeks.

pH

Reef pH should run between about 8.1 and 8.4. It naturally rises during the day (when corals and algae photosynthesize) and dips at night, so a small daily swing is normal. Chronically low pH is often tied to low alkalinity or to too much carbon dioxide in the room — surprisingly, opening a window or improving air flow near the tank can nudge it up. Don't chase tiny pH numbers; keep alkalinity stable and pH usually follows.

Nitrate & phosphate

These are the nutrients that come from fish waste and uneaten food. Unlike a freshwater tank where you want nitrate near zero, a reef actually needs a little of both — corals feed on them. Aim for low but detectable levels: roughly 2–10 ppm nitrate and 0.02–0.10 ppm phosphate. Zero across the board can starve corals and trigger nuisance algae like cyano, while levels that climb too high fuel algae outbreaks and brown out your corals. Water changes and good feeding discipline keep these in the sweet spot.
