Green Phantom Pleco Care Guide: Tank Size, Diet & Tankmates

The Green Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus subviridis, known to hobbyists as L200) is a medium-sized pleco prized for its olive-to-emerald green body dusted with fine pale spots. At Tropical Treasures Wyo, we carry the Green Phantom Pleco L200 along with a rotating selection of other plecos for sale like the Orinoco Snowball L201 and Imperial Tiger L134. Stock rotates often, so message us if you don't see one listed.

Meet the Green Phantom Pleco

Originating from the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters of the Rio Orinoco in Venezuela, the Green Phantom is an active, hardy loricariid that reaches roughly 6–7 inches as an adult. Its green coloration and bold spotting make it a real centerpiece, and unlike the common plecostomus it stays a manageable size for medium aquariums. It is peaceful toward other species but can be territorial with its own kind.

Tank Size and Setup

Because of their adult size and need for swimming and grazing room, we recommend a minimum of a 40–55 gallon aquarium for a single adult Green Phantom, with larger tanks needed if you keep more than one. These fish come from rocky, high-flow rivers, so they thrive with strong filtration and good surface agitation.

  • Provide caves, rockwork, and driftwood so each pleco can claim a territory.
  • A soft sand or fine substrate protects their bellies and barbels.
  • Strong flow and high oxygen mimic their native Orinoco habitat.
  • Live plants are generally safe — the Green Phantom rarely damages healthy leaves.

Water Parameters and Temperature

The Green Phantom Pleco likes warm, clean, well-oxygenated water. Aim for a temperature of 78–86°F, a pH of about 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so consistent water changes and reliable filtration matter more for this species than for hardier algae eaters.

Feeding Your Green Phantom Pleco

Despite the "pleco eats algae" reputation, the Green Phantom is an omnivore that leans toward a protein-rich diet. Algae alone will not keep one healthy. Offer a varied diet of high-quality sinking foods.

Tankmates and Temperament

Green Phantom Plecos are peaceful toward other species but can be territorial with their own kind and with other large bottom-dwellers. They pair well with mid-water and upper-level community fish that share their warm, soft-water preferences, and with other bottom dwellers given enough floor space and hiding spots. If keeping multiple plecos, provide a separate cave per fish to reduce squabbling.

Is the Green Phantom Pleco Right for You?

The Green Phantom is best suited to intermediate keepers who can provide a well-filtered, oxygen-rich tank and a varied diet. If you want a smaller or more beginner-friendly algae eater, consider a bristlenose pleco instead — our bristlenose vs common pleco guide, rubber lip pleco guide, and clown striped L103 guide can help you compare options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big do Green Phantom Plecos get? Most reach about 6–7 inches as adults, which is why we recommend a 40–55 gallon or larger tank for one.

Do Green Phantom Plecos eat algae? They will graze some algae, but they are omnivores that need protein and sinking wafers — algae alone is not enough.

Are Green Phantom Plecos aggressive? They are peaceful toward other species but can be territorial with their own kind, so give each one its own cave and plenty of floor space.
