Cryptocoryne wendtii "Green" is another variety of the Cryptocoryne wendtii species, known for its distinct, vibrant green leaves and its adaptability in aquarium environments. It’s a fantastic option if you’re looking for an easy-care, mid-ground plant with a more natural, lush look.
Here’s a breakdown of what you should know about Cryptocoryne wendtii "Green":
Key Features:
- Leaf Color & Shape: As the name suggests, the leaves are a vibrant green, and they tend to be more upright and narrow compared to the "Tropica" variety, which has broader leaves. The "Green" variant has a natural, fresh appearance that looks great against both dark and light substrate colors.
- Size: It typically grows to about 6-8 inches tall, but it can sometimes grow a bit taller under ideal conditions. It forms a compact clump and can spread quite wide (about 6–8 inches), making it perfect for mid-ground or foreground placement.
- Growth Rate: Moderate. Like the Tropica variety, it doesn’t grow too quickly but also isn’t as slow-growing as some other plants. It requires occasional trimming, but it’s not overly demanding.
Care Requirements:
- Lighting: Cryptocoryne wendtii "Green" prefers moderate lighting but can tolerate lower light conditions. However, you’ll see better growth and healthier plants with medium to high light levels. Just avoid super intense lighting, as that can encourage algae growth.
- Temperature: It thrives in the temperature range of 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C), which is perfect for most tropical aquarium setups.
- Water Parameters:
-
- pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- KH: 3–8 dKH
- GH: 4–12 dGH
- Substrate: This plant will do best in a nutrient-rich substrate like aqua soil, but it can adapt to gravel or sand as long as it receives some supplemental nutrients (like root tabs).
- CO₂ Requirements: While it can grow without CO₂ supplementation, adding it will promote faster growth and help achieve a more vibrant, dense plant.
- Fertilization: Regular fertilization is important. Use liquid fertilizers for the water column or root tabs to provide nutrients directly to the roots. It’s particularly sensitive to iron deficiency, so iron-rich fertilizers will help maintain the healthy green color.
Propagation:
- Like the "Tropica" variety, Cryptocoryne wendtii "Green" propagates by sending out runners that grow into new plants. When the runner is long enough and the new plantlet has rooted, you can trim and replant it elsewhere.
Potential Challenges:
- Crypt Melt: The "Green" variety is also prone to crypt melt when introduced to a new tank, especially if there’s a sudden change in water conditions. If this happens, don’t worry! It will often bounce back as the plant adjusts and new leaves grow in.
- Algae: Keep in mind that it can also attract algae if not maintained properly (especially in high-light tanks). So, be sure to balance your lighting and keep an eye on water quality.
Comparison to "Tropica":
- Leaf Shape & Size: The "Green" variety has narrower, upright leaves, whereas the "Tropica" variety has broader, more wavy leaves.
- Growth Form: "Green" is generally more compact and dense, making it suitable for smaller tanks or areas that need a bit more "fill" in terms of plant mass.
- Color Variation: "Green" tends to stay, well, more green and doesn’t develop the reddish or bronze hues that the "Tropica" variant might exhibit in high-light conditions.
