African dwarf frogs (Hymenochirus spp.) are small aquatic frogs native to Central and West Africa. They are popular in the aquarium trade due to their small size and active, interesting behavior. Here are a few key details about them:

  • Size: They typically grow to about 1.5 to 2.5 inches (4 to 6 cm) long.

  • Habitat: They live in slow-moving streams, ponds, and other freshwater environments.

  • Diet: These frogs are omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. In captivity, they can be fed on pellets, frozen or live food such as brine shrimp and bloodworms.

  • Lifespan: They can live for 5 years or more in a well-maintained aquarium.

  • Behavior: African dwarf frogs are generally peaceful and do well in community aquariums with other peaceful species. They are fully aquatic and spend most of their time swimming.

They have distinctive webbed feet, a smooth green or brownish skin, and often have a slightly darker marking around their face or eyes. They're also known for coming to the surface to breathe air, but they can hold their breath for extended periods underwater.

Fish may not be identical to the pictures you see online when receiving. Most are photos of the parents and to show what they will grow up like to resemble.
