Black Sailfin Molly Care Guide – Poecilia latipinna

The Black Sailfin Molly is a selectively bred variant of the sailfin molly, famous for its deep black coloration and dramatic dorsal fin. Hardy and beginner-friendly, it’s a favorite among aquarium hobbyists.

Natural Habitat

Originating from coastal waters and rivers of the southern U.S. and Mexico, sailfin mollies prefer harder water and mild brackish environments in the wild, but thrive in home aquariums with proper care.

Tank Requirements

Tank Size 20–55 gallons recommended
Temperature 75–82°F (24–28°C)
pH 7.0–8.5 (hard water preferred)
Behavior Active, peaceful, schooling fish

Feeding

Mollies are omnivorous grazers—they enjoy algae, plant-based flakes, and occasional protein treats like brine shrimp or bloodworms.

Tank Mates

Perfect for community tanks with other peaceful livebearers, small catfish, or tetras. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.

Breeding

Females give birth to live fry every 3–4 weeks. Provide dense plants or fry traps to improve fry survival.
